South Warks Tag Rugby tournament WINNERS at Claverdon RFU on Tuesday 21st June

A total of 7 schools contested this year's South Warks Tag Rugby tournament.  St Gregory's being the only school to field two full squads of 10 - with an 'A ' team and a 'B' team.

The 'B' squad consisted of six Year 6's - Eoin D (Capt); Aaron O; Dan L; Grace C-G; Greg M; Niamh L; and four Year 5's - William L; Lizzie C; Jamie M; Luke C.

They progressed to the Semi-Finals through the group stage - drawing with Wooton Wawen 5-5 (try scorers: Eoin); drawing with Claverdon (the hosts) 5-5 (Jamie 2; William; Aaron) and beating Tanworth 6-5 (Daniel L 2; Aaron; William; Eoin and Luke).

The 'A' squad consisted of all Year 6's - Ruben (Capt); Taylor H; Louis; Esther; Beth; Rebecca; Oscar; Cameron H; Raffy; Tom.

They progressed to the Semi-Finals through the group stage - defeating the previous year's winners, Welford 6-5 (try scorers: Taylor 4; Esther; Beth)  - in a match described by the referee as a contest between "two quality teams"; defeating Bidford 6-5 (Louis 3; Tom 2; Oscar) and defeating St Nicholas 5-3 (Louis 2; Ruben; Cameron).

At the SF stage: The 'B' squad was drawn against the 'A' squad in an exciting match of high quality tries (and not a single dropped pass!).  The 'A' squad coming out eventual winners by 6 tries (Ruben 2; Raffy; Tom; Oscar; Taylor) to 4 tries (Greg; Eoin; Jamie; Aaron).

The Final was a showdown between the hosts Claverdon and St Greg's A. The 'A' squad eventually winning 7-6 with St Greg's tries from Taylor 2; Oscar 2; Louis; Ruben; and Cameron H.

.

Footnote: The  A squad's success was built on that of the 'B' squad's efforts in training - as they continually pushed each other to greater heights of team cohesion.

St Gregory's overcome Seven Year Itch!!

Following a seven year interval, St Gregory's Catholic Primary Sportshall Athletics team, representing Southern Warwickshire, finally succeeded in winning, once again, the Level 3 Coventry, Solihull & Warwickshire School Games Primary Sportshall Final, held at North Solihull Sports Centre on Thursday 10th March.

Ten large schools competed in the event which had been won the two previous years by Willenhall Community Primary, Champions of Coventry East.  The captains of the St Gregory's team had experienced a second place finish on two previous occasions but this year a talented group of athletes triumphed in the smallest possible margin, of just - two points!!

With a squad of thirty pupils and a double-decker bus load of supporters, all playing a role in the final result, St Gregory's became County Champions for the third time, replicating wins in 2006 and 2009.  This could not have been achieved without the support of parents, teachers at the school and the inspiration of Andy Pozzi and Paul Bearman of Stratford Athletics Club.
If you follow the link below, it should take you to all of the photos taken on the day.
