Learning how to create suspense in our writing

We tried to create some suspense in the classroom, to know what we were looking for, before we tried to identify ways writers had created suspense in their stories.

We played a game which definitely had lots of suspense and a big anti-climax!

A new skill in PE!

We have been learning how to curl!

Stone Age problem solving in maths

How can we get the children safely across the river without the sabre-tooth tigers attacking?

A Visit From A Cave Dweller!

We knew that Dug the cave man might be visiting so in literacy we wrote some higher order questions to ask him. We had to make sure they were not closed questions because we didn't want him to answer just yes or no!

He answered all our questions in great detail and then showed us how he makes his bow and arrow that he hunts with. With Dug's help we then made our own bow and arrow and went outside for a competition to see which group could fire their arrow the furthest. It wasn't as easy as Dug made it look!
We had to find a way of recording our results as they would have done in the Stone age.

Wacky Clothes Day

We dressed in wacky clothes to raise money for charity. We either made a donation or brought some food in for the food bank to help the homeless and needy.

Prayer Service Led By Lily And Ciaran

The prayer service was on our gospel values theme 'Curious and Active'.

We listened to the story of Eve's curiosity in The Garden of Eden and discussed how being curious can sometimes lead to making  good and bad choices.

Who read the instructions before they started?

Who followed them in order?

What kind of words did you notice in the instructions?

Baptism In RE

We had six families baptising their babies this week!

We had great fun and it really helped us to understand the sacrament of baptism.

Anchor Tasks, Reasoning and Problem Solving in Maths

Lots of 'hands on' activities to get us talking about numbers!

Talk For Writing

We talked about ideas for our Stone Age story through drama and role play.

Ancient Ancestors Day At Ryton Pools

We had great fun learning more about survival in the Stone Age.

We made gathering bags and then went foraging for berries, seeds, fruit and nuts.

We made paint brushes by crushing the ends of a twig with a hammer and used the cooked berries and seeds that we had gathered as paint to make some Stone Age pictures.

In the woods we learnt how to strike a spark with flint to make a fire and then we had to build ourselves a shelter. Some of the shelters were very homely inside with swept floors and logs to sit on! A couple even had a washing line!

At the end of the day we spiked marshmallows onto twigs and toasted them over the fire.
